Foiled attack against France's top police site, public space planned for Dec. 1 : report

Xinhua, November 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Seven male suspects were arrested over the weekend for their plans to strike 20 targets including high-profile police, landmark public places in Paris, and religious sites on Dec. 1, RMC radio reported on Thursday.

Arrested in simultaneous police raids in Marseille, south France and in the northeastern city of Strasbourg, the men were believed to have been planning to carry out the attacks next Thursday following information found on a smartphone, the report said.

One of the suspects, still in custody, told investigators the commando targeted police sites including the headquarters of the General Directorate of Internal Security, northwest Paris suburb, police crime-investigation headquarters at the Quai des Orfevres, and the central Palace of Justice.

They also intended to strike the Disneyland Paris amusement park, Parisian shops in the Champs-Elysee avenue, in addition to a metro station and religious sites.

Aged between 29 and 37, the arrested suspects are of French, Moroccan and Afghan origin. Two of them went to Syria in 2015.

Two men have been released while French police prolonged the detention of the others by 96 hours.

As part of anti-terror operations, 418 people have been arrested so far in the country, according to Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve. Endit
