Greek union of civil servants demands more hiring

Xinhua, November 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Union of Greek Civil Servants (ADEDY) urged the government to hire more people after a sharp decline in personnel in the public service sector.

Public service sector personnel was reduced by about 30 percent in the past five years, from 936,000 in 2011 to 567,000 at the present, ADEDY said at a press briefing ahead of a general strike planned on Thursday.

Greece streamlined its public service sector following the advice of international creditors and experts with a bailout program to address the country's debt crisis that erupted in late 2009.

After several rounds of austerity measures including wage cuts and the abolishment and merger of public entities, approximately 370,000 employees retired or were dismissed.

According to ADEDY, a shortage in personnel in the public service sector are not to the benefit of the Greek citizens. They demand more employment especially in such areas as health, education and social services. Endi
