2nd LD: Egypt court overturns life sentence against Morsi in espionage case

Xinhua, November 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Egyptian court overturned on Tuesday a life sentence against former president Mohamed Morsi in Hamas espionage case, and ordered retrial, state-run Ahram newspaper reported on its website.

The Court of Cassation, the highest degree court in Egypt has ordered that Morsi and 21 co-defendants, including the supreme guide of the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Badie, will also be retried.

Morsi was sentenced to life sentence of 25 years in Egypt in June 2015 in connection with delivering secret documents to Palestinian group Hamas, Lebanese Hezbollah group and Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

The court last week overturned the only death sentence against Morsi in a jailbreak case. Morsi no longer faces execution.

Morsi, the first democratically elected president after 2011 revolution was overthrown by the army in response to mass protests against his one year rule in July 2013.

The Islamist ousted president has received several jail sentences in other cases related to spying and espionage, in which he appealed. Endit
