Xinhua, November 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jordan on Monday said major oil shale projects will start in 2017 to generate oil and electricity.

One of the projects is a 470 megawatts oil shale power plant, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ibrahim Saif said at the opening of an international oil shale conference at the Dead Sea.

The company that will implement the project is expected to secure finance for the project by the end of this year.

The minister said another project is expected to be implemented by Shell to produce fuel from oil shale, adding that the company has conducted several tests in this regard.

Jordan is home to around 70 billion tons of oil shale, the minister said, adding that the year 2017 will witness the launch of several energy projects in the field of oil shale.

Jordan imports about 97 percent of it energy needs annually. The country is working on implementing several energy projects to reduce the percentage to 80 percent by 2020. Endit
