Number of Czech doctors to decline steeply in four years: official

The number of doctors in the Czech Republic will start decreasing sharply in four years as many of them will be retiring and there were not enough young successors.
Ladislav Dusek, head of Czech Institute of Health Information and Statistics, told Czech TV on Sunday that even if the number of graduates from medical schools increased, the effect brought about by the shortage of doctors would become apparent in five or six years.
He said in 2018, 2019 and 2020, the country will face a more significant decline in the number of doctors since many of them will reach the post-retirement age of 65 and 70.
So far, many graduates from medical institutions were hired as doctors to address the shortage. But the measure would not be enough after the number of retired doctors rose. Annually, about 850 students graduate from medical institutions in the country.
According to Dusek, the average age of Czech doctors in some medical fields has reached 59 now. Endit
