Bulgaria busts illegal arms trade gang

The Bulgarian authorities have neutralized a six-member organized criminal group responsible for illegal acquisition and sale of weapons, and seized 50 submachine guns, officials said here on Sunday.

The six criminals, some of them foreigners, were arrested while conducting a deal in Sofia on Friday evening, the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior said in a press release.

In subsequent searches of seven locations, the police found and seized 50 Uzi submachine guns, as well as pistols of various brands and 250 bullets, the ministry said.

According to Georgi Kostov, secretary general of the Interior Ministry, this was the largest amount of illegal weapons seized in recent years, the press release said.

The investigation is ongoing, the ministry added. Endit
