Events of remembrance for road traffic victims held in Czech Republic

On the occasion of Sunday's World Day of remembrance for road traffic victims, remembering events were organized in several cites in the Czech Republic.

A remembering ceremony was held in the morning at the monument to the victims of road accidents at the D1 highway in Prague.

The remembrance events were organized by volunteers and members and associates of the Czech Association of road accident victims.

Organizers said the main purpose of the events is to thank people who provided assistance to relatives of victims, and to remind the public of the far-reaching impact of traffic accidents on people's life.

According to statistics, traffic accidents claimed lives of 660 people last year on Czech roads. Another 2,540 people suffered serious injuries, the number of slightly injured exceeded 24,000. The most tragic day is September 19, when a traffic accident killed 11 people.

The number of victims in traffic accidents in 2015 is the third least in the last three decades in the Czech Republic. The least number of traffic victims is in 2013, when the accidents claimed 583 lives. According to statistics of Czech police, the worst was in 1994, when traffic accidents killed 1,473 victims.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.2 million people died each year in road accidents. Injuries suffered in traffic accidents are by far the leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29.
