Interview: Ghana Electoral Commission confident of credible polls next month: spokesman

Ghana's general election, to be held on December 7, will come out credible following major reforms that have been carried out, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, spokesman for the Electoral Commission (EC) told Xinhua here on Friday.

"The Electoral Commission of Ghana is going to deliver another credible election," the spokesman said.

According to him, the EC, acting through 27 recommended electoral reforms, has recruited election officials and the training of those election officials is ongoing, alongside voter education to be followed.

He said these officials have been recruited with better remuneration and an extended training period, with much focus laid on their appreciating the legal framework of the election, hands-on practical training, simulation of the electoral process.

On security and the credibility of the results, the spokesman is confident that everything will work out well in the end.

"We have been working closely with the police service who are actually mandated to take charge of the election security. We've been working hand-in-hand for some time now and together we have mapped out the country, and we have identified some constituencies as hot spots, flashpoints," he added.

The police have deployed and mapped out strategies to contain any incidents that could mar the peaceful election, he said.

He said the EC is very much prepared as it has finished with all scheduled activities involving key stakeholders and voters, and has finished with all the necessary field activities.

"We expect that the results of this election will just be credible and will be acceptable by the stakeholders and we are going to be acclaimed again by the international community that we have come of age," Dzakpasu said. Endit
