Former Russian economy minister appeals against his house arrest over corruption

Xinhua, November 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Former Russian Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev has filed an appeal against his house arrest over receiving a bribe, a Moscow district court said on Friday.

Russia's Investigative Committee announced on Tuesday the detention of Ulyukayev for receiving a bribe of 2 million U.S. dollars. He is found to get the money from Russia's energy giant Rosneft in exchange for providing a positive appraisal that allowed Rosneft to buy a 50-percent stake of another oil company, Bashneft.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday night dismissed Ulyukayev from his cabinet post after his detention, which shocked Russia.

Ulyukayev was later put under house arrest for two months after investigators said the ex-minister refused to plead guilty in court.

The Investigative Committee, Russia's state body which investigates major crimes, said it has obtained "convincing evidence, including documents, audio and video records, and testimony by witnesses," against Ulyukayev. Endi
