Former Sri Lankan diplomat arrested over misuse of state funds

Sri Lankan investigators arrested former ambassador to the United States Jaliya Wickramasuriya on Friday for allegedly misusing state funds under the previous government.

Wickramasuriya, who is relative of former President Mahinda Rajapakse, was arrested by the Financial Crimes Investigations Division for allegedly accepting a 245,000-U.S. dollar commission while serving as the Sri Lankan envoy in Washington under Rajapakse's regime, local media reported.

He is also alleged to have defrauded more than 33,000 U.S. dollars in purchasing a building for the Sri Lankan embassy in the United States.

The former diplomat is expected appear at a local court later on Friday. Endit
