Two former Rio governors arrested on corruption charges

Brazilian authorities have arrested two former Rio governors in as many days on charges of bribe-taking and vote-buying, local media reported on Thursday.

Sergio Cabral Filho, who twice served as Rio governor from 2007 to 2014, was charged with taking million-dollar bribes from companies bidding for public-sector projects, including the renovation of Maracana stadium, the major site for the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals.

The corruption may have cost the state more than 58 million U.S. dollars, Agencia Brasil news agency said.

Cabral's wife, Adriana Ancelmo, was taken into custody for questioning, and eight other people were also arrested, including Wilson Carvalho, Cabral's chief of staff, and Hudson Braga, project secretary.

A day earlier, Cabral's predecessor Anthony Garotinho was arrested for buying votes in this year's mayoral election in Campos dos Goytacazes, where his wife Rosinha Garotinho is the incumbent mayor, the agency said.

Later on Wednesday, Garotinho was admitted to a local public hospital for a spike in blood pressure.

Garotinho, who was Rio governor between 1999 and 2002, was convicted in 2010 of criminal association and had his political rights suspended for two years. Endi
