Venezuela's ruling party ready to win key legislative seats

Venezuela's ruling Socialist Party, or the PSUV, is poised to win key legislative seats that would trim the rightwing opposition's super majority in the National Assembly, President Nicolas Maduro said on Thursday.

At stake are three deputy posts representing the southern state of Amazonas, which were won by the opposition MUD coalition in regional elections but annulled by the judiciary due to voter fraud.

"There are going to be (new) elections in Amazonas, as we said. There was fraud and the elections have to be done over," said Maduro, adding: "We are going to give the right a beating in Amazonas in these elections."

The National Electoral Council has yet to set a date for the revote, but it could be as soon as Dec. 20, said Maduro.

The opposition had sworn in the three disputed deputies despite a decision of annulment by the Supreme Court of Justice. However, on Tuesday, the MUD announced the three deputies had resigned. Endi
