Roundup: Biggest ever Smart City Expo finishes in Spain

Xinhua, November 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

The largest edition of the Smart City Expo to date closed its doors here on Thursday.

The three days of the sixth edition of the event included 600 cities represented along with 574 exhibitors, and around 14,000 visitors at the Expo.

Leading companies in the mobile communications sector showcased their latest solutions to construct "Smart Cities".

The title of the 2016 was "Cities for Citizens" and highlighted the need to "give people more power and make cities more human" for their inhabitants.

China was the guest nation at the event and the Chinese ministry of housing and urban development received an honorary prize at the Global Smart City Award held on Wednesday in recognition of the technological and human development of China's cities.

Meanwhile, Dunhuang Smart Tourism Company and the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University were nominated in the City Award and Project Award categories.

On Wednesday, Huawei and Vodafone launched a water management system for the Spanish cities of Seville and Malaga which will go into operation in early 2017. The system will allow the city utility firms to detect and predict consumer patterns, discover faults, and produce an overall rise in efficiency.

Esperanza Caro Gomez, director of the economy and commerce at the Seville town hall, told Xinhua that "all of the services the city has are for the service of the people and that is what is going to make it possible for us to implement this new technology in the fastest way possible."

Other major themes tackled at the Smart City Expo were ways of saving energy, environmental management techniques, security in the city, and sustainable tourism. All of this is dealt with by using mobile technology and networks to share information and data and to allow for faster and more efficient service management.

It was also confirmed during the week that forthcoming congresses would have intelligent cities as their central theme. Among these events will be the New York Smart City in May 2017, Smart Island in Mallorca, Casablanca Smart City, and Smart City Buenos Aires, among others. Endit
