Austrian H1 tourism revenue at record half-year high: central bank

Tourism revenues in Austria for the first half of 2016 reached a record-high 9.3 billion euros (9.88 billion U.S. dollars), the National Bank of Austria stated in a press release Thursday.

The result represents a 6.3-percent increase and marks the highest sum ever recorded in a half-year period.

The central bank said German guests were once again the most important for the domestic tourism industry, staying overnight at hotels and guesthouses 4.9 percent more than the year prior. This brought their total number of overnight stays to 27 million, of a total 53.2 million recorded from all foreign guests.

The number of domestic guests staying overnight also increased 3.3 percent to 17.6 million.

The central bank said the average amount of money spent per night stayed also increased, notably from Swiss visitors (up 15.2 percent), Dutch (up 9.4 percent), and Chinese (9.4 percent). It noted that this occurred as hotel and gastronomy costs had also increased.

The central bank also observed continued dynamic growth amongst the Chinese visitors. With spending of 56 million euros, China ranked the 18th place in spending by origin country, ahead of Japan which ranked the 23rd. Endit
