Xinhua, November 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Albania aims at undertaking a complete reorganization of its railway sector in order to operate according to European Union directives, Albanian minister of transport Sokol Dervishaj said Thursday.

Presenting the new railway code at a plenary session, Dervishaj stressed that the new code was the first step towards the comprehensive reorganization of the Albanian Railways.

The current situation of Albanian Railway is aggravated in both the technical and financial terms, Dervishaj said, adding positive developments are expected during 2017.

The minister announced that the European Union fully believes in the development potential of Albanian railway, adding that this was the reason why EU has providing an amount of about 100 million U.S. dollars to build new railway line from Tirana to Rinas to Durres.

Albania also aims at rehabilitating a rail line from central to southeastern Albania, and also a railway link with Macedonia.

Dervishaj confirmed that a feasibility study is being carried out for the rail line with Macedonia. Enditem
