Jordan's King to discuss Middle East issues on New Zealand visit

Xinhua, November 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jordan's King Abdullah II will make an official visit to New Zealand this month to discuss Middle East issues, including the fight against Islamic State insurgents in Iraq, Prime Minister John Key said Wednesday.

"New Zealand and Jordan have a strong bilateral relationship, one which has grown even closer through our time serving together on the (United Nations) Security Council last year," Key said in a statement.

"King Abdullah's visit will be an opportunity to hear Jordan's important perspectives on Middle East issues, including Syria, the Middle East Peace Process, Iraq and broader efforts to counter ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant)."

King Abdullah, a former military helicopter pilot and commander of Jordan's Special Forces, will also visit a New Zealand Defence Force training facility during his visit from Nov. 28 to 30.

New Zealand has deployed troops to Iraq as part of a joint mission with Australia to train Iraqi forces in the battle against ISIL. Endit
