Argentine president calls Trump, congratulating him on his electoral win

Xinhua, November 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Argentine President Mauricio Macri on Monday telephoned U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on winning the presidency, state news agency Telam reported.

During the 15-minute conversation, the two sides expressed their wish to boost bilateral relations.

"Argentina is a great country, and we will have the closest ties between our countries in history," Macri's office quoted Trump as saying.

When Macri said he hoped to see Trump at the G20 major economies' summit to be held in 2018 in Argentina, Trump replied that he would like to welcome Macri at the White House before that.

The two leaders "pledged to work on a common agenda for growth in both countries," Telam reported.

The report said Macri and Trump know each other and have "personal ties," without disclosing more details.

Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra said the call "re-established the personal connection they had for many years."

She added that Trump "has spoken with very few people these days," so the conversation was "significant."

On Thursday, Macri said "the entire world" was "surprised" by Trump's win over his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Relations between the South American country and the United States have become warmer since Macri took office in December 2015. Endi
