A Russian military MiG-29 fighter jet has crashed in the Mediterranean Sea, and the pilot has successfully ejected, Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.

The jet crashed during a training mission as it approached the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov for a landing due to technical failure, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry did not specify when the accident took place, while some media reports said it happened on Sunday.

The pilot has successfully ejected and his life is not in danger, the ministry added.

As Russia's sole aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov has been sent to reinforce the Russian naval group operating in the Mediterranean with the aim of aiding the anti-terrorist mission in Syria. Enditem
