Spanish police discover huge marijuana plantation close to Seville

Xinhua, November 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spain's national police force confirmed on Monday they had discovered a massive indoor marijuana plantation in the town of Moron de la Frontera in the south of Spain.

The police confirmed the investigation took place after local residents of the town, which is situated 63 km to the southeast of Seville, alerted them to the possibility of the plantation existing in local farm buildings.

When raiding the buildings, the police discovered around 3,000 marijuana plants, as well as "heat lamps, humidity sensors and fertilizers," and a "sophisticated artificial air-conditioning system, which created the ideal conditions for the cultivation of the plants."

Weapons and "high-range" vehicles were also seized in the raid as police made seven arrests (five on the farm and two later) "of members of the criminal organization in charge of sowing, collecting and preparing the marijuana plants for their distribution and sale."

Two shotguns, around 700 shotgun shells and 400 heat lamps were taken from the property.

The police explained that upon being tipped off about the plantation, they kept the site under observation to identify members of the gang. Meanwhile, they used advanced systems to detect the heat emitted from the buildings where the plants were cultivated.

The operation remains open however, as the man identified as the suspected leader of the organization and his partner were able to escape in a car following a chase. Endit
