IMF looks forward to working with new U.S. administration while calls for open trade

International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Thursday that it looked forward to working with the next U.S. administration, but declined to comment on any specific policies the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has promised.

"The IMF looks forward to working with the next U.S. administration to help the challenges facing the U.S. economy and the global economy," Gerry Rice, spokesperson for the IMF, said at a regular press briefing on Thursday.

The spokesperson also noted that IMF expected an excellent relationship with the U.S. authorities would continue in the future.

Only two days after Trump was elected as the new U.S. President, "it's too early to speculate (on any specific policies). We need to see how the new U.S. administration defines its policy priorities and related actions once it take office before we would make any assessment of specific issues," said Rice.

During the presidential campaign, Trump has promised to bring back lost manufacturing jobs by renegotiating free trade deals and levying hefty tariffs.

IMF has emphasized the importance of inclusive growth which makes globalization work better and work for everyone, said Rice.

Open economy and trade have delivered many benefits by lifting a lot of people out of poverty, while trade has been an engine of growth for the global economy and holds great potential in the future in terms of growth for the global economy, said Rice. Enditem
