Five-time IAAF World Athlete of the Year, Usain Bolt, has made the shortlists for the awards on Wednesday alongside with some other gold medalists at the Rio Olympic Games.
The Jamaican became the first sprinter to win three straight Olympic titles of the men's 100 and 200 meters in Rio de Janeiro last August, while holding the world records in the two disciplines, 9.58 and 19.19 seconds respectively.
He was joined on the men's list by two-time 5,000 and 10,000 meters Olympic champion Mo Farah of Britain and South Africa's double 400m Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk.
His fellow Jamaican Elaine Thompson matched Bolt's feat by also winning the 100m and 200m golds in Rio, and made the women's shortlist together with Ethiopian Almaz Ayana and Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk.
Ayana broke a 23-year-old record of China's Wang Junxia to win the women's 10,000 meters with 29:18.45 at the Rio Games, where she also took the bronze in 5,000m, while Wlodarczyk retained her hammer title in Rio.
The finalists were determined by the IAAF Council, the IAAF Family and the public vote via social media, and the winners will be announced in Monaco next month. Endit
