Moderate quake strikes off Japan's northeast coast, no tsunami warning issued

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 struck off the shore of Miyagi Prefecture in Japan's northeast on Thursday morning, the weather agency said.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor, which struck at 7:20 a.m. local time (2220 GMT Wednesday), registered 2 on Japan's seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7.

No tsunami warning has been issued as a result of the earthquake, said the JMA.

The quake also registered 2 on the seismic scale in parts of Aomori and Iwate prefectures, and was logged at 1 in Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures.

As of the latest reports, there have been no instances of damage or injury, and all nuclear facilities in the region have reported no abnormalities, according to local officials and Japan's nuclear watchdog. Endit
