Bangladesh, Myanmar hold meeting on trade

The 8th Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Trade Commission meeting was hold in Dhaka Wednesday, with reviews and discussions on a wide range of trade, commerce and investment issues.

Officials say both sides will specially review issues on banking, tariff and progresses to launch a coastal shipping services between the two neighboring countries.

A Commerce Ministry official said Bangladesh is keen to discuss topics like banking transactions as Myanmar's commercial banks have already opened the Asian Clearing Union (ACU) accounts with correspondent banks from the Bangladesh side.

The official who did not like to be named said Bangladesh wants to import hydroelectric power and food grains, timber and other items from Myanmar.

The meeting is expected to discuss on Myanmar's tax reduction pleas for its export items, he said.

According to the official, a joint statement will be issued on Nov. 10 regarding the outcome of the 8th Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Trade Commission meeting.
