1st LD: 1 killed, 12 injured in attacks near Damascus

Xinhua, November 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least one person was killed and 12 others wounded on Sunday when two mortar shells slammed a military hospital north of the capital Damascus, the Syrian army said.

The mortar shells slammed the Tishreen hospital in Damascus' northern neighborhood of Barzeh, said the military statement, adding that all the killed and wounded were civilians.

The mortar rounds were fired from the rebel-held suburb of Douma in the eastern Ghouta countryside of Damascus, the statement added.

Damascus has been subject of frequent mortar shelling by the rebels, in what appears to be a rebel retaliation against the military operations in the countryside of Damascus.

The eastern Ghouta constitutes of several agriculture lands and towns on the eastern rim of Damascus.

The Syrian military forces have unleashed several attacks recently on the rebel-held areas in Ghouta with the aim of cleaning and securing near the capital.

Such areas have fallen to the rebels in the early years of crisis, with the rebels raining down Damascus with mortar shells and the government responds with artillery shelling and airstrikes.

Some local reports suggested that the government officials of the Reconciliation Ministry are working to establish a deal with the rebels in Douma, the main rebel stronghold in eastern Damascus. Endit
