Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, who was on a three-day visit to Nepal, traveled to Janakpur, a Terai town in southern Nepal bordering India, on Friday.

He is the first head of India to visit Nepal after a hiatus of 18 years.

The Indian president offered prayers at the Janaki Temple, a Hindu shrine that annually draws thousands of Hindu pilgrims from India.

During his stopover in Janakpur, Mukherjee also attended a civic reception hosted by local residents.

The Indian leader on Friday afternoon flew to the picturesque valley of Pokhara in western Nepal, where he spent time with former Indian army personnel.

Mukherjee, who arrived here on Wednesday, held series of meetings with top leaders of all major Nepali parties, including with President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

The Nepali government said the Indian president's visit was fruitful to strengthening the Nepal-India relations. Enditem
