India rape victim alleges police asked her humiliating questions

A woman in southern Indian state of Kerala has alleged that police asked her humiliating questions after she tried to report a compliant of her gang rape with them.

The woman told media that police's "brutal treatment" subsequently forced her to withdraw her complaint against her attackers.

The unidentified woman, a mother of two, was allegedly gang rapped by her husband's friends including an influential local politician two year's back. After two years, the woman confided in her husband, who urged her in August to go to the police.

The woman addressed media in Thiruvananthapuram with help of a noted local dubbing artist and social worker Bhagya Lakshmi.

Lakshmi told media the victim contacted her while she had been presenting a show, appealing to women to come forward about the incidents of violence against them.

"Far more than rape, it was the police threats and humiliation that was unbearable," the victim said with her husband by her side.

The couple held media briefing with their faces covered.

The police have denied the allegations. However, the local government according to media reports has promised an action into the allegation.

In Dec. 2002, a fatal gang-rape of a medical student in New Delhi brought spotlight on crimes against women in India.

The incident saw huge protests and resulted in new anti-rape laws in the country. However, brutal sexual attacks against women continue to be reported across India. Endit
