New car sales smash all monthly records in New Zealand

Xinhua, November 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

More new cars were sold in New Zealand in October than any previous month on record - reflecting a high level of confidence in the economy, the Motor Industry Association (MIA) said Thursday.

"Registrations of 14,709 new vehicles for the month of October smashed through all previous monthly records," MIA President John Manley said.

"Not only is it the highest October registrations of any October, it is also the highest ever of any month on record, shattering the previous highest month way back in July 1984 where 13,983 units were registered," said Manley.

"It is also the first time that more than 14,000 new vehicles were registered in a month."

The number of new car registrations was up 16 percent in October 2015 and was 8.6 percent ahead on the year to date compared to the same time last year.

"New vehicle sales are a barometer of business and consumer confidence in the economy. The record sales for the month of October indicate that there is a strong level of confidence in the performance of the New Zealand economy," said Manley.

Last month saw 10,795 passenger and SUV vehicle registrations and 3,914 commercial vehicle registrations.

Toyota was the overall market leader in October with 22 percent market share, followed by Holden with 13 percent and Ford with 11 percent. Endit
