Consultations to designate premier in Lebanon kick off

Lebanon's former Premier Saad Hariri received the endorsement of 86 parliamentarians during the binding parliamentary consultations President Michel Aoun started on Wednesday for the designation of a new premier.

Caretaker Premier Tammam Salam who arrived first at the palace named Hariri, signaling the start of the consultations.

The parliamentarians who named Hariri included ex-premiers Najib Miqati and Fouad Saniora, Deputy Speaker Farid Makari and MPs Butros Harb, Michel el-Murr and Nayla Tueini.

Local media said Hariri had received 86 votes out of 126 possible ones by the end of Wednesday's consultations.

The consultations will continue on Thursday.

Former army chief Michel Aoun was sworn in as Lebanon's 13th president on Monday, ending a vacancy that lasted almost two and a half years. Endit
