ADB lends Sri Lanka 60 mln USD for clean drinking water in CKD prone areas

The Sri Lankan government has obtained a loan of 60 million U.S. dollars from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to provide safe drinking water for chronic kidney disease (CKD) prone areas, a statement by the Finance Ministry said here on Wednesday.

The project will be set up in the districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Matale, Badulla, Monaragala, Puttalam and Kurunegala.

In addition, the project will also contribute to improving priority infrastructure and basic services delivery in 29 local areas in the Western, Southern, Central, North Western and Uva Provinces.

The ADB had also previously provided 59 million U.S. dollars for projects ending December 2016.

Each year, hundreds of people die from CKD in Sri Lanka, especially from the island's north central dry zone agricultural region. Endit
