Tokyo shares close higher on positive China data

Tokyo shares closed higher Tuesday thanks to strong data of Chinese manufacturing activity, though investor sentiment weighed by disappointing Japanese corporate earnings.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 17.38 points, or 0.10 percent, from Monday at 17,442.40.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 0.17 points, or 0.01 percent, higher at 1,393.19.

Gainers were led by electric power and gas, air transportation and real estate issues.

The day's turnover was about 2,109.4 billion yen (around 20.12 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
