Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi on Monday welcomed the election of Michel Aoun as Lebanon's president.

The election of president after two and a half years' vacancy is "a significant step to institutionalize democracy and maintain stability" in Lebanon, Qasemi was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.

Qasemi voiced congratulations to Lebanese people and Aoun himself on behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying that he hopes to see Lebanon's development and prosperity, and the further expansion of relations between Tehran and Beirut.

Meanwhile, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Iran's supreme leader, hailed the election of Aoun, saying it is "a great triumph for the Islamic Resistance movement in Lebanon and for Iran's allies and friends," Tasnim reported.

Michel Aoun, former army chief of Lenanon, was sworn in as the 13th president of Lebanon on Monday.

Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah chief and Iran's ally Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah endorsed Aoun as Lebanon's president Sunday. Endit
