Tokyo stocks closed mixed on Monday as investors assessed a varied batch of corporate earnings reports while dealing with the latest developments in the U.S. presidential election race.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 21.39 points, or 0.12 percent, from Friday to close the day at 17,425.02.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged up 0.61 points, or 0.04 percent, to finish at 1,393.02.

Notable issues that advanced by the close of play comprised marine transportation and metal product issues. And those that significantly lost ground were led by rubber product and mining-linked stocks.

Declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 981 to 866 on the First Section and trading volume dropped to 2.24 billion shares from Friday's volume of 2.62 billion shares.

The turnover on the first trading day of the week totaled 2,329.8 billion yen (22.22 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
