Monchengladbach share the spoils with Frankfurt in German Bundesliga

Xinhua, October 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Monchengladbach and Frankfurt played out a goalless stalemate at the opener of the ninth round in Bundesliga on Friday.

Both sides staged a well-positioned defence over 90 minutes and neutralized every offensive action. Hence, the 53,000 spectators at the Borussia Park saw just a few goal scoring opportunities.

Frankfurt were the better team in the first half as the "Eagles" worked out the first chance of the game with 24 minutes into the encounter when Branimir Hrgota rattled the side netting from promising position.

After the restart, Frankfurt's Omar Mascarell tested Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer with a long-range effort in the 54th minute. However, the hosts ensured the best chance of the game to break the deadlock but Frankfurt custodian Lukas Hradecky tipped Oscar Wendt's shot on target to the bar in the 71st minute.

It remained the last opportunity in a game with just a few highlights. With the result, Monchengladbach had their third draw of the season to move to the eighth place for now while Frankfurt rose to sixth.

"The draw is OK," Monchengladbach coach Andre Schubert said. "We had just one chance and we lacked in creativity."

"We neutralized all efforts from the hosts," Frankfurt coach Nico Kovac said. "My team staged a good performance."

The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: Mainz host Ingolstadt, Wolfsburg see Bayer Leverkusen, Augsburg encounter front-runners Bayern Munich, Bremen face newly promoted Freiburg, Leipzig visit Darmstadt and Dortmund meet Schalke. Enditem
