Nepali PM urges UAE to grant amnesty to Nepali facing death penalty

Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Thursday urged the United Arab Emirates to grant blanket amnesty to a Nepali national who has been facing death penalty in Dubai.

During a meeting with UAE Ambassador to Nepal Saeed Hamdan Mohammad Al Naqbi in Kathmandu, the prime minister made such a request, the prime minister's secretariat said in a press statement.

The Napali national, Amar Bam, a native of the remote Darchula District of Western Nepal, was accused of murdering an Indian national Sharad Shetty in 2003. Bam has been serving his time since then in the Al Abira Central Jail in Dubai City.

Bam left for Dubai on Dec. 23, 2003 in search of job opportunities. Initially he was hired by a proprietor of an Indian Marble Company with a promise of a good job. But he was arrested on the charge of murder of the Indian national after a month. Bom was convicted along with three Indians in the murder case that took place at a club in Bur-Dubai. Bom has pleaded his innocence time and again.

The ambassador also invited the prime minister to attend the World Future Energy Summit to be held in UAE on Jan. 16, 2017. Enditem
