Xinhua, October 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Indian border guard belonging to Border Security Force (BSF) was killed and six civilians were wounded Thursday in skirmishes with Pakistani troops in Kashmir, officials said.

The two sides fired mortars and resorted to heavy firing in R S Pora sector about 45 km southwest of Jammu city.

"A BSF soldier and six civilians were wounded due shelling from Pakistan this morning in R S Pora," an official said. "All the wounded persons were immediately removed to government medical college hospital in Jammu, however, the BSF soldier succumbed there."

According to BSF officials, the Pakistan Rangers started firing Wednesday evening, which continued until Thursday morning.

Pakistan's official broadcaster Radio Pakistan on Thursday said five civilians were injured on their side due to Indian firing.

According to Pakistan military's Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), Indian firing on Wednesday killed two civilians and wounded eight others.

The past several weeks have seen a surge in skirmishes in Kashmir. Both New Delhi and Islamabad accused each other of resorting to unprovoked firings and violating cease-fire agreements. Endit
