Zambian power utility warns of increased electricity rationing

Xinhua, October 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Zambia's power utility on Wednesday warned of increased power rationing hours due to constraints on its system.

Zesco Limited said in a notice sent to its customers that they will be experiencing power rationing beyond normal scheduled time due to severe constrain on its power network.

When contacted for a comment, Henry Kapata, the company's spokesperson confirmed that there will be increased rationing hours for electricity but did not state by how many hours, although some local reports have indicated eight hours.

"We are currently experiencing a constraint on our system but we will issue a comprehensive statement on the matter," he said.

The power utility is currently implementing a four hour rationing program due to a power deficit the country is facing.

Zambia has been facing a power deficit since June last year due to reduced water levels in its reserves.

About 90 percent of Zambia's electricity is hydro-generated. Endit
