Fijian PM hails visits to Australia, New Zealand successful

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has called his official visits to Australia and New Zealand earlier this month a "resounding success," according to the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) on Wednesday.

The visits have strengthened ties with the two close neighbors and traditional partners, and there are a number of new bilateral initiatives in the pipeline, Bainimarama said.

"A few talks on defense cooperation and of course some visits by the patrol boat and there were some talks on rugby, on sports of course, we want to take advantage of the offer put forward by (New Zealand's) honourable Foreign Minister Murray McCully," the Fijian prime minister told the FBC.

Sports development is one of the areas of keen discussions that could see more super rugby matches coming to Fiji beyond the initial two-year agreement, added Bainimarama.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key paid a two-day official visit to Fiji in June. Last month, Bainimarama invited Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to visit Fiji when the two prime ministers met while attending the United Nations General Assembly. Endit
