Ghana declares zero-tolerance for electoral violence

Xinhua, October 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ghana's minister responsible for homeland security Prosper Douglas Bani on Tuesday declared zero-tolerance for election violence in the country's general election.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, Bani warned trouble rousers poised to foment trouble to desist from attempting it, as the agile security agencies would not tolerate any trouble before, during and after the polls.

"We will have zero tolerance for any individual or groups that will disturb the peace. The police will be swift in action and the people will be brought to justice as swiftly as we can," he warned.

Ghana goes to the poll on December 7 to elect a president and 275 legislators.

With a little more than 40 days to the elections, the Ghana Police Service says it has identified over 5,000 hotspots which must be managed to avoid violence.

Bani appealed to Ghanaians to consolidate efforts of the nation's security agencies to ensure peace and tranquility in Ghana.

"We will continue to be vigilant and ensure that we have the peace that we desire."

Four candidates have been okayed by the electoral body to contest the presidential elections. Endit
