Tokyo shares open higher on strong U.S. stocks

Tokyo shares opened higher Tuesday on strong U.S. stocks overnight following the news of AT&T Inc. taking over Time Warner Inc..

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 107.76 points, or 0.63 percent, from Monday to 17,342.18.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 9.31 points, or 0.68 percent, to 1,376.92.

Gainers were led by securities, insurance and transportation equipment issues. Endit
