Pakistani civilian injured in Indian firing: army

Pakistan army said Monday that a civilian was injured in Indian overnight firing along the working boundary in Punjab province.

"Pakistan Rangers (paramilitary force) befittingly responded to the Indian BSF (Border Security Force) unprovoked firing/shelling at Working Boundary in Chuprar and Harpal sectors," the army said.

"Exchange of fire continues. One civilian injured due to Indian firing," an early Monday statement from the army's Inter-Services Public Relations said.

The latest incident happened as escalation along the Line of Control (LoC), which divides the two neighbors in the disputed Kashmir, has been seen since militants attack on an army center in the Indian-controlled Kashmir on Sept. 18, killing 19 soldiers.

The Indian military blamed the Pakistan-based "Jaish-e-Mohammad" group and also pointed fingers at Pakistan. Islamabad rejected the charges and suggested independent investigation.

Pakistan and India had declared ceasefire in 2003 that had silenced the guns. However, firing exchanges do take place time to time and the cross-LoC firing and shelling has increased in recent days.

Two Pakistani soldiers and a civilian have been killed and several, including women and children, injured in the Indian shelling during the current escalation, according to the Pakistan army. Endit
