Sao Paulo keep alive Libertadores hopes

Xinhua, October 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sao Paulo scored either side of halftime as they kept alive their hopes of qualifying for next year's Copa Libertadores with a 2-0 victory over Ponte Preta on Saturday.

Peruvian midfielder Christian Cueva opened the scoring in the 11th minute at Morumbi stadium before David Neres added a second for the hosts eight minutes from time.

The result left Sao Paulo 11th in Brazil's Serie A standings with 42 points, six points shy of the Copa Libertadores places with six matches remaining this season.

Ponte Preta remained 11th with 45 points.

Headlining Sunday's fixtures will be Flamengo's clash with Corinthians at the Maracana stadium and the Gremio-Internacional Porto Alegre derby at Gremio Arena. Endit
