Two parties join ruling PJD in new government

Xinhua, October 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

The leader of Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD), Abdelilah Benkirane, said here on Saturday that two political parties have joined his new coalition government.

Speaking at PJD's National Council, Benkirane said his strongest ally leftist Party of Progress and Socialism (12 seats) and the nationalist Istiqlal Party (46 seats) have confirmed their participation in the next government.

With PJD's 125 seats out of 395-seat parliament, the new coalition is made up of 183 seats so far.

Benkirane added that he is still waiting for the decision of other parties, particularly his former partnering parties the National Rally of Independents (35 seats) and Popular Movement (27 seats), as well as the opposition party of Socialist Union of Popular Forces Party (20 seats).

On Oct. 10, King Mohammed VI received Benkirane at the Royal Palace in Casablanca, Morocco's largest city, and named him prime minister for a second term with the task of forming a new government. Endit
