Death toll in Philippines from typhoon Haima climbs to 16

Xinhua, October 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Death toll in the Philippines from super typhoon Haima, locally named as Lawin, rose to 16, a senior government official said Saturday.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Ricardo Jalad said in an interview with a state-run radio station that of the reported fatalities, five were still being validated if it was due to typhoon.

Most of the casualties came from Cordillera Administrative Region and due to landslide, he said.

A total of 35,486 families or 149,659 persons were displaced and most of them remained inside 643 evacuation centers, NDRRMC said in its latest report.

Some 80 road sections and bridges in northern part of the country were not passable due to flooding and landslides.

There are still some areas which have no supply of electricity and with intermittent telecommunication signal. Endit
