British number one Johanna Konta has won the WTA's most improved player of the year award for 2016, the WTA announced on Friday.

The 25-year-old reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in January before taking her first WTA Tour title at Stanford in June.

She has climbed to a career-high ninth place in the world rankings from 147 in June 2015. She is now ranked in 10th place.

Germany's Angelique Kerber won the WTA player of the year award after securing the year-ending world number one position.

Kerber won her first Grand Slam at the Australian Open and took a second at the US Open. She also won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics and lost in the Wimbledon final to Serena Williams. Endit
