S. Sudan refutes U.S. claims it supports rebels against Sudan

Xinhua, October 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

South Sudan on Friday denied accusations by the United States that it was supporting rebel groups against Sudan.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mawien Makol told Xinhua that South Sudan and Sudan were working closely on different issues including the implementation of "security arrangements agreed in 2012.

"We are advising the U.S. government to refrain from these accusations. We don't have rebels of Sudan and don't have interest to do so," said Makol.

His remarks came after the U.S. State Department issued a statement Tuesday accusing Juba of continuously supporting rebels antagonizing Khartoum.

"Credible reports continue to indicate the government of South Sudan is harboring and providing assistance to armed Sudanese groups," the U.S. statement said.

During South Sudan's First Vice President Taban Deng Gai's visit to Sudan in August, the two countries agreed to deny base for rebel groups.
