1st LD: S. Africa begins process to withdraw from ICC: justice minister

Xinhua, October 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

South Africa has begun the process of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC), Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Michael Masutha confirmed on Friday.

Written notice has been submitted to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and withdrawal will take effect one year after the secretary general receives notification, Masutha told a press briefing in Pretoria.

South Africa is hindered by the Rome Statute under which the ICC was established, Mashutha explained, adding that the Rome Statute compels the country to arrest people who may enjoy diplomatic immunity but who are wanted by the ICC. Endit
