Tokyo shares close lower after earthquake rocks western Japan

Tokyo shares closed lower Friday with market confidence dampened after a strong earthquake jolted western Japan.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 50.91 points, or 0.30 percent, from Thursday at 17,184.59.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 5.51 points, or 0.40 percent, lower at 1,365.29.

Decliners were led by miscellaneous product, information and communication, and construction issues.

The day's turnover was around 2,320.0 billion yen (22.28 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
