Xinhua, October 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) staged a mild retreat on Thursday as traders booked profits made over the past few sessions.

The all-share index slipped 0.16 percent to 51,421.66 points at the close of session while the blue-chip top 40 eased 0.16 percent. Gold had fallen 0.2 percent to 1266.44 U.S. dollars an ounce.

Banks have recovered since falling fairly sharply last week as the National Prosecuting Authority announced fraud charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Trading in resources was mixed. Gold miners extended gains for a third day running and diversified miners lagged.

The South African rand was trading at R13.94 to the U.S. dollar, R17.01 to the British pound and R15.21 to the euro.

Global resources group Glencore shed 1.34 percent to R40.35, but Assore gained 4.43 percent to R169.80 and Sibanye Gold dropped 1.49 percent to R42.33.

Telkom shed 1.83 percent to R57.43 and MTN 2.25 percent to R107.50.
