Belarus welcomes U.S. decision to extend moratorium on its sanctions

Xinhua, October 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Belarus welcomes the U.S. decision to extend a moratorium in relation to a number of Belarusian enterprises, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Ministry said the Belarusian side remain convinced that the full cancellation of the existing U.S. sanctions would have the most favorable effect on more dynamic development of the Belarusian-U.S. relationship.

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Bridget Brink said at a news briefing in Minsk on Tuesday that the U.S. would extend the suspension of the sanctions earlier imposed on nine Belarusian enterprises by six months.

The official also said that the U.S. looks forward to further improving relations with Belarus.

In 2007-2008, Washington imposed restrictive economic measures against Belarus' state-owned petrochemical company Belneftekhim. In October 2015, the U.S. Treasury has suspended sanctions against the company and eight petrochemical companies connected with it. Endit
