India, Myanmar sign deals to enhance cooperation

India and Myanmar on Wednesday signed three pacts and agreed on closer security coordination in border areas, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Myanmar State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi here.

The two leaders met at iconic Hyderabad House at the heart of Delhi and discussed various issues of bilateral interest to enhance cooperation in different fields before witnessing the inking of agreements in the fields of power, banking and insurance.

Addressing a joint media meet, Modi described Suu Kyi as an iconic leader and said that India was very much committed to the development of Myanmar.

Suu Kyi invoked India's pre-independence icon Mahatma Gandhi and first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and said the people of Myanmar were looking forward to benefitting from Indians' march towards economic and political developments.

Suu Kyi arrived in India on October 16 on a four-day visit on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. This is her first visit to India after her National League for Democracy party assumed power in March this year. Endit
